Greetings, fellow Lunians! As many of you might already know by now, I've been playing Eternal Lunia lately, which does away with the ridiculous heavy stat progression that some servers have. As such, they don't have linear gear progression (Elven Fairy, Flying Temple, Ancient Rodesian I-IV). Instead, much like the old days of Lunia, they have a stage set dropped by the first 9 stages of an episode, a boss set dropped by the final stage of an episode, raid sets, and sets bought from shops. Typically, when comparing gear with similar level requirements, you will find that no one set is definitively better than another; rather, each has their pros and cons. Yay for options! Similarly, Eternal Lunia has done away with the ridiculous valkyrie pets that make every character have near 100% critical chance. Instead, all pets have the same effect of passively increasing speed, and buffing with a mana regeneration buff. Yay for being able to choose a pet based on looks rather than stats! However, this has caused several fellow intellectuals who play Int-type characters to question if Int is still worth getting when we don't crit all the time, and which equipment set should we get? Needless to say, I shall share my thoughts... Str or Int? Firstly, lets take a look at what each stat does for Int-type characters. Strength (Str) Str increases all damage. The damage increase is not linear, but instead gets significant increases at certain points. (501, 1001...) While I am not able to to get an exact figure on how Str affects damage, according to my estimations, for stats at around the 100~300 range, Str increases skill damage by approximately 0.03% per point. Intelligence (Int) Int increases the critical damage of magical attacks, maximum MP, healing amount, and chance to immobilize. It does not affect normal or physical attacks. Eir's SSSSS counts as a normal attack. Let's take a look at the magical critical damage increase aspect. As with Str, I am not able to get an exact figure. I do know for a fact that the increase becomes linear at 0.1% per point once you reach ridiculously high stats, but for now, that's not what we have here. According to my estimations, for stats at around the 100~300 range, Int increases magical critical damage by approximately 0.03% per point, and has increasing returns. This is additive to the base 130% crit damage. Considering that we don't crit all the time, this seems unimpressive compared to Str. However, we still have increased maximum MP, increased healing amount, and chance to immobilize. For every point of Int, maximum MP by about 6. Mana can be exchanged for goods and services, and by goods and services I mean skills and buffs. Int also increases healing amounts by a little over 0.03% per point (Again, this is an estimate, and is not exact. Don't sue me please). This only affects characters who have healing skills (Eir, Kali, Dark Eir), and to anyone else, it is irrelevant. Finally, we have "Chance to Immobilize". For every point of Int, chance to immobilize is increased by 0.2. This is what allows you to flinch enemies, as well as aircombo them for more damage. Unfortunately, I have no idea what the formula determining success or failure of flinching is, but it's something I guess. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ It may be worth noting that any increases are rounded down, so if you have a skill that deals 100 damage, and a 0.9% increase in skill damage, you will still deal 100 damage, because 100.9 will be rounded down to 100. Conclusion In conclusion, Str is clearly the superior choice when it comes to maximising damage. However, damage isn't everything, and should not be confused with DPS (Damage Per Second). All those high damage skills are as good as useless if you don't have enough MP to use them. And while maximum MP does not directly increase mana regeneration rate, it can still be useful. All the different sizes of mana potions restore varying amounts of MP, but have a shared cooldown. If you have, say, 500 MP, you can at best use a medium MP potion for +450 MP. But what if you're at 60 MP, and need 70 MP to cast a skill? You would not be using the maximum effect of the potion if you use it then. With more max MP, you could use MP potions more efficiently, or use larger MP potions. This is important for some characters, because with smaller MP potions, you might use up all your MP before the potion has cooled down. Also, Dainn and Yuki's 'S' recovers their MP by a percentage of their maximum MP. My personal opinion is that, for the current state of the game at least, I would almost always rather have an extra 300 maximum MP, than an extra 1.5% damage. TL;DR for Str vs. Int:
Fierce Tiger or Black Tortoise? There are many different sets in the game, with different set effects and level requirements. But for today, I will only be focusing on the two most commonly purchased sets from stores: Fierce Tiger and Black Tortoise (aka Guardian Tortoise). These are the most cost-effective sets that you can straight up buy from the weapon shops in squares. They have varying "degrees" for various levels, and starting from 4th degree, they have a set effect. For sets of the same degree, both will have the same price and visual appearance. This is somewhat related to the previous question, since Fierce Tiger set increases Str, while Black Tortoise set increases Int. If you're interested in the other available options, please check out the Eternal Lunia Wikia. It may still be a work in progress (for now), but they can provide approximate knowledge of many things. Fierce Tiger Set The Fierce Tiger set offers a high amount of Str, and a moderate amount of Vit. It does not increase Int, Dex, or MP. At 4th degree or higher, it gets a set effect. The 2 and 4 set effect increase Vit and Str respectively, while the 6 set effect is... applied damage's X%Amount Life Power Recovery(Chance: 100.0%) Wait, dafoq did I just read? English, motherfucker, do you speak it? Not to worry, I've got this. In simple English... "applied damage" = "Your damage dealt" "applied damage's X%Amount" = "An amount equal to X% of your damage dealt" "Life Power Recovery" = "Regain HP" "(Chance: 100.0%)" = Do you really need an explanation for this? Well, it means it has a 100% chance to happen. Thank you, captain obvious. *flies away, far away, searching for my dream* In other words, you will regain HP equal to X% of your damage dealt. This is 1.7% at 4th degree, and can go up to 2.0% at 7th degree. As with any % based thing, values are rounded down; if you deal 100 damage, you will regain 1 HP, because 1.7 will be rounded down to 1. Note that this will not work at 0HP, and does not apply to damage dealt by flutes. Black Tortoise Set (aka Guardian Tortoise Set) The Black Tortoise set offers a high amount of Vit and Int. It does not increase Str or Dex. At 4th degree or higher, it gets a set effect. The 2 set effect increases intelligence, the 4 set effect increases MP regeneration (2 MP/sec for 4th/5th degree, 3MP/sec for 6th/7th degree, does not work at 0HP), and the 6 set effect increases magical damage (4.1% at 4th degree, 4.4% at 7th degree). Sure, it doesn't increase physical skill damage, but it's not like Int-types have many physical skills anyways. One thing to note about the 6 set effect is that the damage increase is not additive, but rather, multiplicative. This makes it better than you might have expected. For example, suppose you have 5% skill damage increase, before factoring in the 6 set effect. A 4th degree Black Tortoise set does not give (5+4.1)% = 9.1% skill damage increase. Instead, it gives 4.1% of 105% (100% base skill damage + 5% skill damage increase). 1.041 x 1.05 = 1.09305 Your final total skill damage would be 109.305%. In other words, 9.305% increased skill damage. That "4.1%" is more like a 4.305%. Comparison Let's take a look at the 4th degree sets of both Fierce Tiger and Black Tortoise. For simplicity, we shall assume both sets are clean (no fortification, light fortification, or grading). Even if they weren't, they'd get the same bonuses anyways. Both sets give +623 defense. Fierce Tiger set gives 22~62 damage, +61 Str, +36 Vit, and +13 HP. After factoring in 2 and 4 set effect (Vit +9, Str +10), the Str and Vit bonuses are +71 and +45 respectively Black Tortoise set gives 22~60 damage, +52 Int, +54 Vit, +17 HP, and +17 MP. After factoring in 2 set effect (Int +9), the Int bonus is +61 In terms of normal attack damage, the Fierce Tiger set wins by 2 points of maximum damage (22~62 vs 22~60). That's not really a big deal, in my opinion. The Fierce Tiger set has 9 less Vit and 4 less HP than the Black Tortoise set. 1 point of Vit is about 6~7 points of HP, so the Fierce Tiger set has about 54~59 less HP from Vit than the Black Tortoise set, and in total, 58~63 less HP. That's a little over half a point point in the "Increased Health" ability. As for MP, in addition to the +17 MP, the Black Tortoise set has +61 Int, which gives +366 MP. In total, it adds +383 MP. That's a lotta MP. That's like between 3~4 points in the "Increased Mana" ability. Moreover, the Int from the Black Tortoise increases healing amount, as well as chance to immobilize. While the Fierce Tiger set does win in Str, that does not necessarily mean that it wins in skill damage, because Black Tortoise set's 6 set effect increases magical damage. And I'm sure that +71 str does not beat +4.1% multiplicative increased damage. I think you'd be hard-pressed to find anything that can beat multiplicative increased damage. Fierce Tiger might win in physical skill damage, but how many physical skills do Int characters have? Arta's Twirling Hammer? To show some anecdotal evidence, let's take a look at the character information of myself, an exemplary user of the Black Tortoise, and a heretic friend of mine who swears by the Fierce Tiger... for now. I was equipped with a full 4th degree Black Tortoise set, with each part graded and fortified to +7. Meanwhile, KawaiiPriest was equipped with a full 5th degree Fierce Tiger set, but it was not fortified. Our stats are almost identical, with my Str being almost equal to her Int, and vice versa. She had 87 more Str, and 16~39 more normal attack damage (which also affects skill damage) than me, but I have 1.49% more skill damage. To recap, a clean 4th degree Fierce Tiger set would give 71 more Str than its Black Tortoise counterpart. This isn't even a "fair" comparison, because I'm using a set that is 1 degree lower than hers. Unfortunately, we are poor, and can't exactly afford to spend money on a new clean set, unless someone wants to donate to us? :D Also, KawaiiPriest might be willing to draw your Eternal Lunia character like one of your French girls in exchange for in-game golds if you ask politely. Maybe. Go fund her! But I digress, lets take a look at the final difference between the sets. The Fierce Tiger set's 6 set effect will allow you to regain 1.7% of your damage dealt as HP, while the Black Tortoise set's 4 set effect will allow you to passively regenerate 2 MP every second. Both of them stop working once you reach 0 HP. And needless to say, you cannot recover more than your maximum HP or MP. If we consider HP and MP recovery to be of equal value, then, in order for the Fierce Tiger to recover more than 2 HP per second, 1.7% of your DPS must be greater than 2. Math time! Let required DPS = n, 0.017n > 2 n > 2 / 0.017 n > 117.647 Therefore, if you value HP and MP recovery equally, your must deal more than 117.647 damage per second in order for the Fierce Tiger set to be more worth it. Of course, not everyone places equal value on HP and MP recovery. If you value MP recovery more, perhaps because you have healing skills, or you eat MP potions for breakfast, then the Black Tortoise set might be a winner in this comparison. Likewise, if you value HP recovery more, then the Fierce Tiger might be the winner. Conclusion / TL;DR The Fierce Tiger set wins in normal attack damage (slightly), physical skill damage (irrelevant to most Int-type characters), as well as HP recovery upon dealing damage. The Black Tortoise set wins in HP, MP, MP regeneration, healing amount, chance to immobilize, and magical skill damage. Personally, I think the Black Tortoise is generally the better choice. The only thing you're really missing out on is the "HP recovery when dealing damage" set effect, but you gain so much more. Also, here's a random fun fact: The Black Tortoise is a Chinese mythological creature, one of the "Four Symbols". Meanwhile, a Fierce Tiger is... a common mortal animal. It might be fierce, but it's still an ordinary tiger nonetheless. Would you prefer sets named after legends, or sets named after ordinary stuff? Which do you prefer? Let us know in the comments! I agree, it's not worth more than a minute's consideration. Tortoise is perfect for Int chars, the HP leech pales in comparison. I guess it's worth considering as a 2nd set to swap to...maybe. Tortoise vs. Daru is more worthy of comparison for a standard INT char.
