Greetings, fellow Lunians! Have you ever wondered if the passive ability, "Concentration", is worth learning? Well, I have, so I did the math to answer this question once and for all. Grab a glass of fruit juice concentrate, it's gonna be a long read~ What is Concentration? Concentration is a passive ability which gives the player a chance that no MP is consumed upon using a skill. Originally, this skill was only available to certain characters, and had varying proc rates and maximum level depending on the character. However, in Eternal Lunia, passives have been normalized, and everyone has the same passives, including concentration. Concentration has a 1.5% proc chance per level. At the maximum level of 8, the proc chance is 12%. Note that your skill info might show a 0.5% lower proc chance on odd-numbered skill levels, due to rounding errors with decimal places. Concentration can still proc at 0 HP, but will never proc if you do not have enough MP to cast the skill. As with any other RNG dependent thing, it is not very reliable; it might proc ten times in a row, or never proc at all. Concentration vs. MP regen MP regen is one of the alternative methods to maintaining your MP, but how does it fare against Concentration? Let's do the math! MP regen gives 1 MP per second per level. At the maximum level of 8, it gives 8 MP per second. Unlike Concentration, it does not rely on RNG and is more consistent; however, it does not work at 0 HP nor full MP. While MP regen's benefit is fixed, Concentration's benefits may vary depending on a few things:
On average, Concentration saves you 1.5% of your MP spent per level. For Concentration to provide more benefit than MP regen, 1.5% of your MP spent per second must be greater than 1. Let's do some quick maths... Let MP consumption = n; n x 0.015 > 1 n > 1 / 0.015 n > 66⅔ Thus, you will need to use more than 66⅔ MP per second, or 4,000 MP per minute for Concentration to provide more benefit than MP regen, and that's if you don't get rekt by RNGesus. But how do I know how much MP I am using per second? You could record videos and watch your own replays, or do the math, but in my opinion, the best way to judge would be to actually play and get a feel of it for yourself. Here's some basic values to help you estimate... Default MP regen per second: 1 Default max level pet MP regen: 10 MP per second for 15 seconds every minute (10 x 15) / 60 = 2.5 MP per second. Default Large Mana / Rejuvenation Potion recovery: 900 with 40 second cooldown 900 / 40 = 22.5 MP per second Default Extra Large Mana / Rejuvenation Potion recovery: 1,400 with 40 second cooldown 1400 / 40 = 35 MP per second Assuming you have no points in MP regen, a max level pet, and no other sources of MP; If you are using Extra Large MP pots and Large Rejuvenation pots as soon as their CD is up, your MP per second is: 1 + 2.5 + 35 + 22.5 = 61 If you are using both Extra Large MP and Rejuvenation pots as soon as their CD is up, your MP per second is: 1 + 2.5 + 35 + 35 = 73.5 If you do not need to use Large Rejuvenation pots for MP, or are using medium/small Rejuvenation pots instead, you are most likely using less than 61 MP per second, and Concentration would be less beneficial than MP regen. If you struggle with MP issues in the former scenario, but not the latter, chances are, you are using between 61 to 73.5 MP per second. It is questionable if you are using more than 66⅔ per second, and more experimentation or calculations specific to your case will need to be done to get a more accurate estimation. If you struggle with MP issues in the latter scenario, you are most likely using more than 73.5 MP per second, and Concentration would be more beneficial than MP regen. TL;DR: Pros and cons of concentration over MP regen + Works at full MP + Works at 0 HP - Unreliable; RNG might screw you over - Will not work if you don't have enough MP = Better than MP regen if you spend more than 66⅔ MP per second, or 4,000 MP per minute. How (un)reliable is Concentration really? We all know that Concentration is unreliable because RNGesus might decide to troll you. Of course, the more skills you use, the more likely you are to proc Concentration at least once. As such, if you are able to use more skills before running into MP issues, Concentrate becomes more reliable. I did the math to find out more, and made a table and a graph, to find out just how likely an unlucky streak would be. Let's take a look at the table... Oops. Here's the right one. Here's a table which shows the odds of a max level Concentration proc-ing as you use more skills. And here's a graph: As you can see, the chances of Concentration proc-ing is like a curve. The chance of never getting a Concentration proc goes down with more skills used, but the rate at which it decreases gets less and less, and never reaches 0. It is also worth noting that different skills have different MP costs, and there is always the possibility of Concentration proc-ing on a skill with a relatively high or low MP cost. For example, if you are skill cancelling Eir's Holy Spirit with a level 1 Heal, it doesn't make much of a difference whether or not Concentration procs on Heal, as Heal has around 5-6 times less MP cost than Eir's other skills. As such, Heal shouldn't be counted when considering how many skills you can use before running out of MP. Similarly, Dark Eir's Wave of Quick Healing costs about twice as much MP as most of her other skills. If you proc Concentration on that, good for you! However, if you proc Concentration once on Voice of Terror, the MP saved isn't going to be enough for casting another Wave of Quick Healing. For anyone interested in the calculations: Where n = number of skills used; Chance of not proc-ing for any one skill: 1 - 0.12 = 0.88 Chance of never proc-ing within n uses of skills: 0.88^n Chance of proc-ing at least once: 1 - chance of never proc-ing Chance of proc-ing exactly once: n[0.12^1 x 0.88^(n-1)] = 0.12n x 0.88^(n-1) Chance of proc-ing more than once: Chance of proc-ing at least once - chance of proc-ing exactly once. Conclusion / TL;DR While Concentration is not a reliable skill, it is not completely useless either. If you use an average of more than 66⅔ MP per second, Concentration will most likely be more beneficial than MP regen. If you are struggling with MP issues despite using Extra Large Mana / Rejuvenation pots, you are most likely using more than 73.5 MP per second, and thus, benefit more from Concentration than from MP regen. The more skills you can use before running out of MP, the more likely you are to get a Concentration proc before having MP issues, and the less unreliable Concentration becomes. While the viability of the "Concentration" skill is debatable, fruit juice concentrate is good. Disclaimer: This blog post is provided as-is and is correct at the time of writing.
